Our Day Out – Theatre Essay Free Online Research Papers Our Day Out Theatre Essay The play â€Å"Our Day Out† is about a school class from Liverpool that go on a school trip to Wales. They go to a few places along the way like the zoo an old castle and the beach. One of the teachers, Miss Kay, wants all the people on the trip to have fun – this leads to a lot of disturbance, like the children stealing animals from the zoo and the old castle being overrun with chaos. While on the other hand Mr Briggs is a very strict teacher who wants the trip to be solely educational. Another main character is Carol, who is one of the students on the trip. She plays a big part in the cliff scene. This scene is significant, as it is the turning point in the two teacher’s personalities. You can see how Miss Kay and Mr Briggs react when under pressure and after the cliff scene Mr Briggs changes his attitude from the grouchy man to the good-hearted and amusing teacher that was all along inside of him. If I was to set the scene I would set it on a frosty and windy day, this would make the impression that something wicked is a about to take place. To make dramatic tension and a scary feeling I want the theatre to be huge and with loads of height. I want the cliff, which is shown in the diagrams, to be hanged from a wall about 15 feet up from the ground so that the height of the cliff will scare anyone standing on it or even the audience. So that none of the actor’s backs are shown to the audience I want the audience to be seated either side of the cliff in increasing rows so that everyone can see. I want the whole of the inside of the theatre to be painted in sky blue and I want painted seagulls dotted around. Because of the height of the cliff and the safety of the actors I want mats all over the floor painted in sea colours. In the corners of the theatre there will be speakers, which will project the sound of waves and seagulls so that the audience feel more like they are n ear the beach instead of inside a theatre. The audience will feel like they are part of the scene as instead of the side of the cliff been pinned to one wall and the audience been on the other side, it will be sticking out into the audience and the audience will be either side. To make the more of the dramatic tension I would need both actors to shout most of their lines, like when Carol says â€Å"Don’t lie you! I know you hate me. I’ve seen you goin’ home in your car, passin’ us on the streets. And the way y’ look at us. You hate all the kids.† , but more so with Mr Briggs as he is the strict teacher while for Carol I’ll need to have tears in her eyes in the middle of the scene, this would make the audience feel sorry for her. At one moment Mr Briggs is very annoyed by Carol, he says â€Å"Now just you listen to me – I’ve had just enough today, just about enough and I’m not putting up with a pile of silliness from the like of you†¦Ã¢â‚¬  This shows that Mr Briggs’s patience has run out. I would like the actor that plays Mr Briggs to play a typical strict teacher, loud, clear, stern, angry look and standing upright and tall to make himself big. At this point Carol steps clo ser to the edge of the cliff, the audience will start to feel scared. On the quote Willy Russell uses short sentences to the actor speak quickly, this is also effective in building up tension. Right towards the end the atmosphere changes, the quote â€Å"Nothing. I promise you†. At this time he is trying to comfort Carol as she as been through a lot. The quote shows a change in Mr Briggs personality, he now seems like a trustworthy man. You can see carol’s feelings towards Mr Briggs, as in the quote â€Å"Don’t lie you! I know you hate me. I’ve seen you goin’ home in your car, passin’ us on the streets. And the way y’ look at us. You hate all the kids.† This moment shows that Carol knows that Mr Briggs doesn’t like kids and that Mr Briggs doesn’t have a good attitude towards them. I want to highlight the fact that that Carol doesn’t like Mr Briggs and neither does he like her. When the actor says these line s I want her to have an angry look and speak very clearly with her lines. On the quote Willy Russell uses short sentences to the actor speak quickly, this is also effective in building up tension. To show Mr Briggs feelings I’ve used the quote â€Å"Carol. Carol, please come away from there. Please†¦Ã¢â‚¬  At this point Carol smiles and the audience will be relieved that she didn’t jump. This moment shows that although Mr Briggs is a strict teacher who has a bad attitude to kids, he still cares for them and that is also what I want to highlight. This moment would also show his real personality. I want the actor when speaking these lines to hold out his hand to show trust and to also have a soft, gentle voice, which will calm Carol. To show Carol’s personality I have used the quote â€Å"Why can’t I just stay out here, eh? Why can’t I live in one of them nice white houses an’ do the garden an’ that?† This shows that she h as an accent. It would also show that she like gardening which would also show her personality as a patient, calm girl but on the other hand the scene shows that she can’t wait to grow up and doesn’t seem calm either. As the school is from Liverpool it’s not surprising that Carol has an accent. I want Carol’s actress to play with a northern accent. Towards the end Carol says â€Å"Sir, Sir, y’ know if you’d been my old feller, I woulda been all right all right, wouldn’t I? At this point Carol moves to the very edge of the cliff. The sentence makes you think that it is her end because she talks about what she could have been if something was different and as this is the kind of thing you say towards the end of your life. The audience will be very scared at this point as they think she is going to jump. When you see that hunters are about to kill Bambi’s mother in the film Bambi you start to feel scared. When they kill her and you start to sob, you start to wonder- why is there a sudden death in such an innocent film? In some respects the play has the same effect of when Carol is about to jump off the cliff, you think that why should anyone die and especially in such an innocent play. When she doesn’t jump you feel relieved that a young and innocent girl that only wanted to have a nice house and do the garden up nicely, didn’t throw her life away. To achieve the same scare that you got in Bambi, I would make sure that the actress playing Carol moves very slowly towards the ends of the cliff and when she walks to the cliff I want the actress to walk backwards to the edge. If it sounds too good to be true, thats because it is. The Congressional Reform Act is a work of fiction, a sort of angry taxpayers manifesto that went viral on the Web and continues to be forwarded and forwarded again, with little regard for facts. Thats right. No member of Congress has introduced such a bill - and none would, given the widely circulated emails numerous half-truths and bogus claims. So if youre wondering when the Congressional Reform Act will pass the House and Senate, heres a little tip: It wont. Proponents argue that term limits would prevent the constant politicking, fundraising, and campaigning for re-election that seems to consume so much of Congress members’ time today, especially in the case of representatives who most run for re-election every two years. Those who oppose term limits, and there are several, say that in America’s democratic republic, elections themselves act as term limits. And, in fact, members of the House and Senate are required to face their local constituents every two years or every six years and re-apply for their jobs. If the people are unhappy with them, they can literally â€Å"toss the rascals out.† Along those same lines, term limit opponents point out that while the president serves all of the people, members of Congress serve only the residents of their states or local congressional districts. Thus, the interaction between members of Congress and their constituents is far more direct and personal in nature. Trinity Church Henry Hobson Richardson designed his most famous building, Trinity Church in Copley Square, after winning a competition in 1972. James O’Gorman described Trinity as â€Å"a cultural even of the first importance in American history.† â€Å"The building both represents a departure of the Boston’s mind from its Puritan past, and emergence of American creativity as a force in architecture.† Born in 1838, Richardson was raised just outside New Orleans and surrounded by the colorful stucco buildings of New Orleans. He was from an American family but was greatly influenced by the French culture of his area. After being denied admission to West Point, Richardson graduated Harvard, class of 1859. After Henry Hobson Richardson graduated Harvard University, he decided to remain in the North to study rather than return to New Orleans. He had the opportunity to study in Paris at the Ecole des Beaux Arts, travel to London, travel through rural England, and through Southern France and Spain, making some trips with his friend Henry Adams. Richardson collected postcards throughout his trips that would eventually amount to over 3000 images. Later, he returned to the US and began practicing in New York. Richardson served on the Staten Island Commission, and then moved to Brookline, MA in 1874 after completing several commissions in Boston. Richardson then designed Trinity Church during his remaining twelve years that he spent in Massachusetts. Trinity Church is a prime example of revival architecture. When the â€Å"New Republic† of the United States gained its independence, the â€Å"New Democratic Citizens† wanted their place in history reflected in their architecture. The people of the 18th century were proud people, with rights, rights to build homes and communities of their own. And so, the revival style was born, a style built upon the perceptions of their predecessors, the Greeks and Romans. The difference was they had more freedom than their predecessors. This revival style continued into the 19th century when Trinity Church was designed in a Romanesque Revival Style. The primary difference was scale as churches grew dramatically in size. Furthermore, the construction of the Trinity Church brought about the Richardsonian Romanesque Style. This architecture style remained prevalent during the Victorian period, primarily as a result of the widespread influence of the Trinity Church that displayed bold stonework, complex roof patterns, and arched openings. One defining feature of Romanesque architecture is a round-headed arch. Trinity is articulated with many round-head arches that frame its windows and entrances.

I like Elizabeth Bennet because I can see myself in her. I am so protective when it comes to my family I always defend them from rumors about us. Pride and Prejudice is the story of Mrs. and Mr. Bennet and their five daughters, Jane, Elizabeth, Mary, Catherine and Lydia, especially Elizabeth. The story focuses on various romantic adventures these young girls encounter at their residence. Their parents are strikingly contrasting to each other. Mr. Bennet comes across as a wise and witty gentleman, while the issue of marrying off her daughters has absorbed Mrs. Bennet completely. The arrival of the young and wealthy bachelor Charles Bingley and his friend Fitzwilliam Darcy in the neighborhood adds a new twist to Austen’s tale. While Jane Bennet, the oldest and most beautiful of the Bennet sisters, attracts Mr. Bingley’s eye and sparks fly, Darcy upsets another sister, Elizabeth, with his proud behavior and arrogance. She is now looking for every opportunity to demean Darcy and see him down. However, as fate would have it, Darcy finds himself drawn to Elizabeth’s liveliness and independent spirit, when she comes to visit Jane at Netherlands, Bingley’s residence. This doesn’t set well will Bingley’s sister, Caroline, and her jealousy becomes quite apparent. In the mean time, Elizabeth meets a young and charming military officer, George Wickham.Wickham who tells Elizabeth about his past mistreatments at the hands of Darcy. This grows Elizabeth’s disdain for Darcy. As the story progresses, even Elizabeth finds herself attracted to Darcy. Darcy proposes to her, much to her surprise. He tells Elizabeth that he had been fighting and trying to overcome his feelings for her, due to her family’s inferiority. Feeling insulted, she rejects the proposal saying that she dislikes Darcy as he mistreated Mr. Wickham and is also responsible for separating Jane and Bingley. The next da,y she receives a letter from Darcy, narrating an alternate version of events.Things once again go sour between the duo, due to certain misunderstandings. Some time later, they meet again and Elizabeth comes to know that Darcy is a kind and generous man and that he has played a major role in bringing Jane and Bingley together. Darcy musters the courage to propose her once again and this time, Elizabeth accepts the proposal. Jane and Bingley also clear their misconceptions and come together as the climax unfolds. ‘Pride and Prejudice’ is the story of the various fondness, mannerisms and engagement pranks that develop due to Mrs. Bennet’s insistent matchmaking and the dashing Darcy’s passionate relationship with Elizabeth Bennet. 6. Servicescape is defined as, â€Å"the environment in which the service is delivered and where the firm and the customer interact.† (Baker and Cameron 1996) It encompasses several factors related to the delivery of service which includes all the physical, behavioral, and emotional aspects that surround services delivery. However, with each type of service, various factors must be considered in order to gauge the quality of the servicescape in the delivery of the said service. For instance, the delivery of services of the Frazier Museum and the Louisville Public Library are distinct in several ways. Although both companies deliver educational and informational services to the market, they have different ways of delivering the said services to their clients. The Frazier Museum allows its visitors to take a peek into American History. It allows its visitors to understand and value better the various events that have shaped the country to what it is today. The museum delivers such service through different ways. For one, there are exhibition halls where important and valuable artifacts are on display. Also, the museum provides its patrons with various interpretation exhibitions of different historical events. Advance audio-visual equipment are also a vital component in the delivery of the museum’s services for it makes the experience more interactive. On the other hand, the Louisville Free Public Library employs traditional methods to deliver the information needs of its clients. The library is well-equipped with the necessary tools in order to provide its clients with the information that they seek. Various collections of books are the primary sources of information that the library delivers but these are supplemented with various audio-visual equipment. Furthermore, the library classifies its sections depending on the user. This means that there is a children’s section which contains materials devoted solely to children. Also, the library provides various tools to ensure that their handicapped and disabled patrons still get to enjoy the library’s services. Although the library provides a complete range of services, it lacks in ways by which they can attract more users and visitors. This is where the Frazier Museum has the advantage. The museum constantly seeks ways of improving its servicescape so as to attract more visitors. Also, it constantly changes in order to make the experience of visiting the museum more enjoyable and fruitful each and every time. The Frazier Museum has the advantage over the Louisville Public Library when one considers the servicescape of each. The museum has the ability to give its visitors the experience that they want when the visit. Moreover, the museum is able to incite the patriot within each visitor and make him realize again the profound history of the very nation to which he belongs to. As earlier mentioned, the emotional factor is a vital component in servicescape.   Furthermore, since the museum’s main target market is composed of tourists and students, especially kids, it is able to ensure that the experience is enjoyable through various interactive tools. In other words, the environment in delivering the services of the museum is inline with its target market by addressing the needs of the said market. Thus the therapeutic decision making is based on identification of the organism (Beekmann, S. E., Diekema, D. J. and Doern, D. J., 2005). The first test obviously would be to do a light microscopic examination. Direct microscopic examination may provide a rapid, presumptive report of Gram-positive cocci resembling staphylococci. Isolation of S. aureus should be performed using 5% blood agar following an incubation period of 18-24 h in air at 35-37 C. Staphylococcus aureus ferments mannitol, resulting in a change in the colour of the medium from pink to yellow. Colony morphology may be used by the experienced observer to define presumptive staphylococci. A Gram stain appearance of cocci in clusters and a positive catalase test provide rapid indicators of staphylococci. However, in order to be able to distinguish between Staphylococcus aureus and the remaining members of the staphylococcus species, other tests are necessary. For clinical microbiological purposes, two or three simple tests suffice. The coagulase test detects the production of coagulase by S. aureus. In this test, one colony is mixed with plasma, incubate d at 37 C for 4 h and observed for clot formation. Samples that are negative at 4 h are incubated and observed again for clotting at 24 h. The slide agglutination test detects clumping factor (ClfA). This is performed by making a heavy homogenous suspension of cells in distilled water on a glass slide to which a drop of plasma is added.
