These profiles are often full of buzzwordy corporate fluff.  But when written well (i.e. when written by actual employees and not HR), a success profile can be a valuable framework when you start a job a compilation of past experience, something that reminds you of best practices. This got me thinking: what would a success profile for an MIT student look like? This is a challenging question to answer, because the variety of experiences and perspectives across MIT is staggering.  Thats the whole point of going here.  There are 22+ majors, and if you do a quick back-of-the-envelope calculation my experience as a Course 2 is characteristic of less than 5% of the possible paths you could take. But during the past three years at MIT Ive taken a good number of team-based project classes, and learned a lot.  Ive worked closely with students from many different courses, and a handful from Harvard too.  This year, Im taking the biggest project class of them all: 2.009, the senior capstone mechanical engineering class. So while I cant really provide a success profile for the Ideal MIT Studentâ„¢, I do have a good sense of what types of people tend to make great teams.  These are the people I get super excited about to work with in 2.009 the people I know will be big value-adds to the team. So here goes: my stab at a success profile, heavily informed by my experience in project classes, UPOP, and at companies.  Whether youre a freshman or not, I hope this is useful. Have informed imagination. There are two parts to this: (1) being technically excellent and (2) having the creativity to come up with novel solutions. The first part isnt too hard for most MIT students.  Your standard class does a good job of instilling the basic concepts of fluid mechanics, molecular biology, or whatever else youre working on. I dont know if GPA is that strong of a correlation for this Ive worked with people who did well on tests but not so well at applying knowledge.  Effective use of knowledge means quickly grasping which first principles are involved in a problem, and then diving deeper into the science of what youre working with in order to better inform your design. The second part, creativity, is harder to define.  Its not just blue sky thinking, though that certainly is part of it.  Within the context of science/engineering, I think creativity on a daily basis is mostly about approaching problems flexibly.  Dont bias yourself towards one solution too early on in the process.  Be open to other peoples ideas, even if you dont initially understand them.  Consider the limitations of your perspective when approaching a problem. Fight for excellence Fighting at first seems like an odd term, but I think it fits because getting something right is hard.  Its not enough just to care about excellence.  You need to care deeply about getting something right and also have the work ethic and stamina to actually get there.  This often means putting yourself in uncomfortable situations asking hard questions, challenging ideas and assumptions, and taking ownership of problems that no one else really wants to deal with. down to the details. This is not the same thing as perfectionism. Perfectionism is often a negative thing if you get bogged down in the details, you lose sight of whats actually right, of what actually matters for the project.  Executing the details means owning and really understanding your part, while keeping in mind how your piece impacts the whole system.  It also requires that you convey data and information about your work effectively to the people youre working with this is as important as the work itself. Form trust. No team can function well without trust. During the course of a project you inevitably will have disagreements; youll need to debate and challenge your teammates without damaging the relationship, and that requires trust. Trust starts with doing excellent work, but it extends beyond that. It requires communicating why you designed something the way you did.  It means making sure people understand why something is important when you make a challenging request.  It also means not being egocentric about your capabilities, and not expecting trust simply based on your resume.  Frankly, building trust is one of the hardest parts of forming a team, especially if youre working with strangers but it is absolutely essential.

North Korea is arguably one of the most prolific rogue states within the global landscape. North Korea has consistently beaten the drum on the threats towards the United States. It has not only threatened to target United States Military facilities, but also threatened to target and destroy major metropolitan areas of United States allies. In a show of force and capabilities, in 1998, North Korea fired a long-range rocket into the Pacific Ocean, but did so over Japan. This not only showcased their range capabilities, but also matched the rhetoric that they are willing to disregard international laws with the intent of threatening the United States. Since the inception of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), North Korea has historically disregarded and violated the treaty. The largest violation of this treaty was the manufacturing of nuclear weapons. Under the treaty, inspections were scheduled to begin in May 1992. Inconsistencies began to arise during the initial inspection stages, and the following year North Korea refused access to the inspectors and withdrew from the NPT. In 2005, North Korea declared that it had manufactured nuclear weapons. The development of nuclear weapons did not only showcase their ability to behave as a rogue state actor, but it also made them a major threat in the world stage and particularly to the United States. North Korea on numerous occasions has showcased and tested short, medium, intermediate, and intercontinental, range ballistic missiles. Throughout the years, their missile range has continued to grow with potential range capabilities of 8,100 miles. While the range capability in itself is alarming, North Koreas rhetoric against the United States has continued to harden. While denouncing and threatening the United States and its allies, they have conducted a cumulative of six nuclear tests. These tests have occurred under both Kim Jon-il and Kim Jong-uns leadership. The first nuclear test was conducted in October of 2006, then in May 2009, under Kim Jon-il. While under the leadership of Kim Jung-un, North Korea detonated nuclear weapons as part of a test in February 2013, January and September 2016, and September 2017. While North Korea has stated on several occasions that they have amassed a large nuclear stockpile, estimates have ranged on the actual size. Most recently the United States Intelligence Community has confirmed that they do have nuclear weapons, based on their six nuclear tests. The current estimates of their stockpile are ranging to as many as 60 nuclear weapons. This estimate is based on the amount of enriched uranium and separated plutonium it possesses. Lastly, North Korea remains a threat to the United States by continuously perpetrating human rights abuses. Human Rights Watch has described North Korea as one of the most repressive authoritarian states in the world and that it curtails all basic human rights, including freedom of expression, assembly, and association, and freedom to practice religion. It prohibits any organized political opposition, independent media, free trade unions, and independent civil society organizations. Arbitrary arrest, torture in custody, forced labor, and public executions maintain an environment of fear and control. In 2014 the United Nations Commission of Inquiry also reported similar findings on human rights violations against North Korea. Its findings stated that the governments atrocities towards their people include murder, enslavement, imprisonment, and many other crimes against humanity. As recent as 2017, based on estimates by the International Bar Association, North Korea is holding over 80,000 political prisoners.7 These prisoners are being subjected to what the International Bar Association describes as systematic murder (including infanticide), torture, persecution of Christians, rape, forced abortions, starvation and overwork leading to countless deaths. Building A Campfire Essay There are many different campfire structures that can be built to start a fire while camping. The most common are the teepee, log cabin, dugout, and tunnel structures. Almost anyone can build these fires if he or she follows some key points. A fire needs three elements: air, fuel, and an ignition of some kind. For a campfire the air element is easily accessible; its the air a person breaths or oxygen. Fuel is equivalent to wood. Sometimes lighter fluid is used to start big fires immediately, but usually when dealing with a campfire the fuel is wood. Ignition can come from a spark, match, or lighter. It is anything that initially starts the fire. Going deeper into wood, there are three categories to classify it under. Kindling is the stuff that is easiest to burn. It could be leaves, dryer lint, or very small twigs. The next size of wood is sticks and small logs. These will range in size from one half inch to two inches in diameter. Anything larger than this is classified as the fuel. The fuel is the big logs that will burn for hours. When a fire is started it needs to be built like this: kindling first, then sticks and small logs, and then the fuel, once the fire is going good. Using this technique with the following fire structures will ensure hot easy fires. The teepee style structure is probably the most used and easiest to build, but doesnt necessarily result in the hottest or longest burning campfire. To build this fire think about the name teepee. The end result before burning this structure looks like an Indians teepee (If the teepee shape is not familiar, then envision a conic shape). Start by placing the intermediate size wood or sticks in the ground in a circular shape about eight to twelve inches in diameter, leaning the tips of the sticks together in the center. The sticks should already start to resemble a teepee shape. Continue layering the walls of the teepee with more sticks, but not too thick, because air needs to be able to pass through the walls easily. Leave a hole on one side large enough to place kindling inside the stick walls. This hole is also left to light the kindling from the inside and may be filled in once the fire is lit. Once this is completed, the structure should be a recognizable teepee or cone shape. The kindling should be lit on the underside inside the teepee walls through the hole that was left. Due to this easy structure, when the smaller sized twigs start to fall in and burn up, larger sized sticks can be placed on the outside in the same manner as before, keeping the teepee shape. A log cabin campfire structure is just as easy to build as a teepee, but must be built more accurately in order for the fire to burn efficiently. In the same way the teepee name resembled its shape, so does the log cabin. Its built by placing two sticks parallel to each other, and than another two on top parallel to each other also, but perpendicular to the previously laid sticks. When viewing the structure from the top it should look like a square. Continuing this procedure while sliding each layer to the middle slightly will produce a pyramid shape without a top. The end result will appear to be a miniature log cabin that grows narrower towards the top. In the center of this cabin is where the kindling is placed. When lighting this structure, a hole might have to be dug under one side if there isnt enough clearance to light the kindling from the bottom side. After its lit, sticks can be laid across the top like a roof, and then eventually the fuel will be laid on top too. The next two structures are to be built when there isnt a fire ring in the campsite and a hole needs to be dug to contain the fire. The first of the two, the dugout, is started by digging a hole. The initial hole should be slightly oval in shape and reach into the ground about one foot. This paper shall now assess the following statement: public international law is nothing more than a reflection of what powerful states choose to do. It shall review the claim that international law is based on not what the international community wants, but what the powerful nations want. This thesis shall be evaluated in this discussion via theories and discussion by experts and scholars in international law. This paper is being undertaken in order to provide a comprehensive and academic discussion of the subject matter. Discussion International laws are ideally implemented based on principles and mandates which are formulated by its member nations. These mandates are voted on and ratified by member states and later implemented to govern international transactions and relations. In the actual setting, these laws in relation to political processes may often be considered irreconcilable and conflicting with each other. For the most part, dominan t states may not want to use the different processes available under international laws; they may sometimes consider turning to politics instead1. However, the international systems seem to dissociate itself from power and domination. Based on the principle of sovereignty, the international laws are distancing itself from the more dominant applications of power and of political might. However since international laws always need power in order to enforce its policies, on its own, these laws seem to be powerless in most situations2. It is in unable to control power states based on its own standing, therefore it seems to depend on the application of the balance of power. In other words, in instances â€Å"when there is neither community of interests nor balance of power, there is no international law†3. Consequently, international law sometimes appears as a beacon of equality where justice prevails and power plays are consigned to the realm of politics where the more cutthroat relations prevail. This difference in application finds its best expression in the designated roles of law and politics in the early 19th century in the era of the Concert of Europe. In its interaction with weaker countries, the Concert carried out its processes via political, not so much in the legal processes4. This mutual exclusion is sometimes utilized to define the contemporary relations in international and the United States. The US, which is disinclined to ratify treaties and is more inclined to be relieved of international legal processes, often appears as a â€Å"lawless hegemon, however in spite of that, international law among the rest of states seems to flourish on its way to realizing the values of the international community†5. Moreover, the laws and political power seems to function in differing plains. As a result, international law appears idealized and the realists and critical legal scholars have accepted the fact that the laws are shaped and dictated by po wer6. Many scholars have even accepted the fact that the history of international laws marks milestones of power dominance. This paper shall proceed to evaluate whether or not the power displays in the international realm impact on the application of international laws.
